污水在迁移、流动和汇集过程中不可避免会混入泥砂。污水中的砂如果不预先沉降分离去除，则会影响后续处理设备的运行。最主要的是磨损机泵、堵塞管网，干扰甚至破坏生化处理工艺过程。沉砂池主要用于去除污水中粒径大于0.2mm，密度大于2.65t/立方米的砂粒，以保护管道、阀门等设施免受磨损和阻塞。其工作原理是以重力分离为基础，故应控制沉砂池的进水流速，使得比重大的无机颗粒下沉，而有机悬浮颗粒能够随水流带走。沉砂池主要有平流沉砂池、曝气沉砂池、旋流沉砂池等。现代设计的主要有旋流沉砂池。
