动机论，在道德评价中主张根据人的主观愿望来确定行为的道德意义的理论，与“效果论”相对。动机论认为人的行为善恶取决于动机是否善良，而与行为所产生的效果无关；人的道德义务源于先验的善良意志，是善良意志发出的命令即所谓的“道德律令”，道德评价的标准是根据人的行为的动机、意向、行为所遵循的规则等道德的因素，而不去考虑行为结果对人对己的利与害。判断或评价行为的善恶只须看动机，不必看效果。这种理论割裂了动机与效果的辩证统一关系，是片面的。动机论的代表人物有康德、布拉德雷、儒家以及基督教伦理学家。 动机论亦称“意向论”。是一种片面强调动机的道德评价理论。与“效果论”相对，认为人的行为善恶取决于动机是否善良，而与行为效果无关。判断或评价行为的善恶只需看动机，不必看效果。在中国，儒家伦理具有明显的动机论倾向。孟子主张“王何必曰利？亦有仁义而已矣”(《孟子，梁惠王上》）。董仲舒则明确提出“正其道不谋其利，修其理不急其功”(《春秋繁露》)。认为人的行为善恶，主要看他是否出于“道”、“理”动机，而不在于功利效果。
