战国楚置黔中郡。秦楚战争之后，秦国将楚国的黔中郡和巫郡合并成新的黔中郡，郡治在原巫郡所在地(今湖南怀化市以南40公里的黔城)，辖今湖南西部及毗连的川、黔区域，但不包括沅陵和常德。西汉改为武陵郡，包括常德和沅陵。唐曾以黔州为黔中郡。又唐分江南道置黔中道，治黔州(治今重庆彭水)，辖地比秦黔中郡，东境减今湖南方面部分地区，西则包有今贵州大部。后世遂以黔为贵州的别称。
