高棉又译“吉蔑”，即柬埔寨。位于中南半岛南部，古名扶南国。因80%的居民为高棉人，故称。建国于公元1世纪下半叶，历经扶南、真腊、吴哥等时期。9世纪—14世纪吴哥王朝为鼎盛时期，国力强盛，文化发达，创造了举世闻名的吴哥文明。1863年沦为法国保护国。1940年被日本占领。1945年日本投降后再次被法国殖民者占领。1953年11月9日，柬埔寨王国宣布独立。
