生态系统中生物群落经过一系列演替，达到跟环境条件之间形成相对稳定的状态，称为顶极，达到顶极的生物群落称顶极群落。例如，湖泊边的杂草、昆虫和其它无脊椎动物，随着湖泊的缩小，向新露出的泥滩发展，原来的草丛则为灌木所侵入，最后为乔木所代替，逐渐形成土壤肥沃、动物繁多、相对稳定的树林，即达到了顶极的状态。
