通货是指“流通中的货币”的别称。即在商品生产和商品流通过程中起一般等价物作用，执行价值尺度、流通手段、支付手段、贮藏货币等职能的货币，通货是各国货币供应量中无需背书的部分，只包括纸币、硬币，不包括货币的存储功能以及其他支付手段。如中国的人民币、欧盟的欧元、美国的美元、英国的英镑等等。
