试验区又称外围区（outer buffer zone），是位于缓冲区外的一个多用途地区。除了开展与缓冲区相类似的工作外，主要用于经营能短期收效的农林牧副业生产，创立人工生态系统，为当地或该自然景观带的植被恢复起示范作用。在外围区内最好也能包括部分原生或次生类型，以开展科普教育和旅游活动。该地区也是自然保护区的管理机构和有关服务机构的设置地。
