中国曾称“钝剑”或“轻剑”，1973年改现名。英文称作Foil，直译“薄片”，取其剑身轻薄之意。法文称作Fleuret，是fleurette（小花）一词的阳性形式，中文名“花剑”即是意译自法文。由剑柄、剑身和护手盘组成。
