统一化是把同类事物两种以上的表现形态归并为一种或限定在一个范围内的标准化形式。统一化与简化有密切联系，但也有区别。前者着眼于取得一致性，即从个性中提炼共性，后者着眼于精炼，即肯定某些个性同时共存，并非简化为只有一种。统一化有两类： 一类是绝对的统一，即不允许有什么灵活性，如各种编码、代号、标志、名词术语、单位、运动方向 (开关的转换方向、电机轴的旋转方向、交通规则) 等; 另一类是相对的统一，允许标准指标有一定范围的变化弹性。
