主要是指高等脊椎动物细胞从一个地方向另一个地方转移。一般是用培养的动物细胞观察细胞的移动。细胞移动可以分为三个过程∶首先是细胞前缘的扩展(extension)，这一步是由肌动蛋白的聚合作用引起的；第二是扩展的前缘通过粘着斑的形成附着到基底(substratum)；第三是通过胞质溶胶向前流动和细胞尾部的收缩将细胞向前推进，在细胞质收缩过程中，肌动蛋白纤维断裂蛋白可能起了重要作用。
