“碰钉子”其由来有两种：一是说封建时代的衙门、官宦人家宅邸的大门上都有“门钉”，老百姓常在这地方受制于人，门难进、事难办、脸难看，被却之门外，谓之“碰了钉子，或说“碰了一鼻子灰”。元杂剧《西厢记·寺警》一折：“我撞钉子，将贼兵探知。”可见元代时已有“撞钉子”此语。
不老实的人非碰钉子不可。
