炮台，就是架设火炮的台基，是随着火炮的发展而出现的一种战时工事。一般设在进可攻、退可守的战略要塞，具有两门以上的火炮，是旧时在江海口岸和要塞构筑的永备炮阵地。主要装备大口径、远射程的火炮。阵地为永备工事，比较坚固。
