泥岩是指弱固结的黏土经过中等程度的后生作用（如挤压作用、脱水作用、重结晶作用和胶结作用）形成强固结的岩石。是已固结成岩的，但层理不明显，或呈块状，局部失去可塑性，遇水不立即膨胀的沉积型岩石。
