水源保护区，是指国家对某些特别重要的水体加以特殊保护而划定的区域。1984年的《中华人民共和国水污染防治法》第12条规定，县级以上的人民政府可以将下述水体划为水源保护区：生活饮用水水源地、风景名胜区水体、重要渔业水体和其他有特殊经济文化价值的水体。其中，饮用水水源地保护区包括饮用水地表水源保护区和饮用水地下水源保护区。
