标准普尔评级是由美国标准.普尔公司1923年开始编制发表，当时主要编制两种指数，一种是包括90种股票每日发表一次的指数，另一种是包括480种股票每月发表一次的指数。 1957年扩展为现行的、以500种采样股票通过加权平均综合计算得出的指数，在开市时间每半小时公布一次。由于它们占有详尽的资料，采用先进科学的分析技术，又有丰富的实践经验和大量专门人才，因此它们所做出的信用评级具有很高的权威性。 标准普尔，是世界权威金融分析机构，由普尔先生(Mr Henry Varnum Poor)于1860年创立。标准普尔由普尔出版公司和标准统计公司于1941年合并而成。标准普尔为投资者提供信用评级、独立分析研究、投资咨询等服务，其中包括反映全球股市表现的标准普尔全球1200指数和为美国投资组合指数的基准的标准普尔500指数等一系列指数。其母公司为麦格罗·希尔(McGraw-Hill)。
