中国文学史，是一部漫长而辉煌的历史，五千年古国盛衰兴亡的风云在其中舒卷；是中华文明最值得自豪的瑰宝。悠久的中国文学史分为前后两个时期，应称前时期为“古代”，后时期为“近代”，“古代”为中国文学发生以后不断的发展，形成中国的传统文学，而使其传统文学发展到其顶点的时期，就是中国文学最光荣的时期。“近代”为中国的传统文学受某种势力的压力，失去自己的传统，不能再向上发展，由其顶点日趋下坡的时期。这是中国文学史上非常分明而极重要的事实。
