总成本又称“寿命周期成本”。指产品从研制、生产、使用、直到淘汰整个时期的成 本。一般用C来表示。寿命周期成本包括制造成本和使用成本。制造成本包括产品从用户提出需要开始研制起，经过设计、试制到生产这一阶段所消耗的费用，用G来表示。使用成本包括产品在使用过程中的能源消耗，维修费用，管理费用等使用阶段所消耗的费用，用c2表示。总成本c则等于c1±c2。价值工程的着眼点，是以最低的寿命周期成本，可靠地实现产品的必要功能，因此，不仅要注意降低生产制造成本，同时也要重视降低使用成本。只有产品的总成本降低了，才能提高产品的竞争能力和体现出对整个社会提供更多的积累。
