彩绘，在中国自古有之，被称为丹青。常用于中国传统建筑上绘制的装饰画。后来传到朝鲜半岛和日本。并被两者广泛运用和发扬光大。在中国古代建筑上的彩绘主要绘于梁和枋、柱头、窗棂、门扇、雀替、斗拱、墙壁、天花、瓜筒、角梁、椽子、栏杆等建筑木构件上。主要以梁枋部位为主。成语“雕梁画栋”由此而来。中国建筑的彩绘的运用和发明可以追溯到2000多年前的春秋时代。它自隋唐期间开始大范围运用，到了清朝进入了鼎盛时期，清朝的建筑物大部分都覆盖了精美复杂的彩绘。
