建筑是建筑物与构筑物的总称。是人们为了满足社会生活需要，利用所掌握的物质技术手段，并运用一定的科学规律、风水理念和美学法则创造的人工环境。有些分类为了明确表达使用性，会将建筑物与人们不长期占用的非建筑结构物区别，另外有些建筑学者也为了避免混淆，而刻意在其中把外型经过人们具有意识创作出来的建筑物细分为“建筑”（Architecture）。需注意的是，有时建筑物也可能会被扩展到包涵“非建筑构筑物”，诸如桥梁、电塔、隧道等。 建筑物有广义和狭义两种含义。广义的建筑物是指人工建筑而成的所有东西，既包括房屋，又包括构筑物。 狭义的建筑物是指房屋，不包括构筑物。房屋是指有基础、墙、顶、门、窗，能够遮风避雨，供人在内居住、工作、学习、娱乐、储藏物品或进行其他活动的空间场所。建筑相关专业多是指狭义的建筑物涵义。最能够说明“建筑”相关专业学习的建筑物的概念的是老子的：“埏埴以为器,当其无有,器之用也。凿 户牖以为室,当其无有,有室之用。“这也无疑是对狭义建筑物概念，最清晰最直接的表述。 有别与建筑物，构筑物是没有可供人们使用的内部空间的，人们一般不直接在内进行生产和生活活动，如烟囱、水塔、桥梁、水坝、雕塑等。
