学习理论简称“学习论”，是说明人和动物学习的性质、过程和影响学习的因素的各种学说。心理学家从不同的观点，采用不同的方法，根据不同的实验资料，提出了许多学习的理论。一般分为两大理论体系：刺激-反应（S-R）理论和认知理论。刺激-反应理论又称联想主义（或行为主义），是继承英国联想心理学派的一种理论体系，哲学上受洛克的经验论的影响。这派理论一般把学习看作刺激与反应之间联结的建立或习惯的形成，认为学习是自发的“尝试与错误”（简称试误）的过程。
