有两个或两个以上意义的词叫多义词。多义词是一词多义，几个意义之间往往有联系。多义词是“单义词”的对称。多义词是具有几个彼此不同而又相互关联的意义的词，这些意义是同属一个本义（基本意义）的转义，引申、派生或衍生意义。人们在社会生产发展中要反映日趋复杂的客观现象，就不可避免地要用原有的词来表示相关的其他事物， 使新旧词义并存。
