原始地球，一般指约在46亿年前刚从太阳星云形成的地球。初生的地球，在继续旋转和凝聚的过程中，由于本身的凝聚收缩和内部放射性物质（如铀、钍等）的蜕变生热，温度不断增高，其内部甚至达到炽热的程度，于是重物质就沉向内部，形成地核和地幔，较轻的物质则分布在表面，形成地壳。初形成的地壳较薄，而地球内部温度又很高，因此火山爆发频繁，从火山喷出的气体，构成地球的还原性大气。
