南狮是起源于广东南海的传统民俗文化。民俗认为舞狮可以驱邪辟鬼。是民间体育艺术的典型代表，更是华人筚路蓝缕、昂扬向上和奋发进取精神的写照。龙舟和南狮，在南海有着深厚的群众基础。每逢节庆或有重大活动，例如新张庆典、迎春赛会等，必有扒龙舟、敲锣打鼓，舞狮子助兴，自古至今，长盛不衰。特别是得到港澳和海外同乡的传承发扬，在改革开放以来，这种富有喜庆色彩的民间活动更加兴旺。
