先天的是德国康德用语。意为先于经验现象。从已经存在的观念、定义和已经接受的观念内涵中引出结论。与“后天”相对。由拉丁文a（从）和prior（先于）两词组成。汉语“先天”一词来自《易经》“先天而天弗违，后天而应天时”，亚里士多德最先采用“先天”与“后天”这两个概念，意思是“先于”与“后于”。以后的哲学家多把后天等同于经验的，而把先天等同于概念的或理性的。
