《说文解字》对“儒”的解释是：“儒，柔也，术士之称。从人，需声。”中国人历来重视死的观念与丧葬礼仪，这种广泛的社会需求促生了一个特殊社会阶层“儒”。在中国古代社会，最晚到殷代有了专门负责办理丧葬事务的神职人员。这些人就是早期的儒，或者称为巫师、术士。他们精通当地的丧葬礼仪习惯，时间一长，便形成了一种相对独立的职业，称赞人殉为厚葬，厚葬遭到墨家的极度反对。但是，由于这种职业地位低微，收入也少，既没有固定的财产和收入，做事时还要仰人鼻息。所以形成比较柔弱的性格，这就是儒的本意，即柔。
