该品为少常用中药，原名"砒石"，始载于宋"开宝本草"。市售信石分红信石及白信石二种，但白信石极 少见，故主要为红信石，其加工制品为砒霜。该品的原矿物主要为砷华，但也有用毒砂或雄黄加工制造而成的。 来源为天然的砷华矿石、或由毒砂（硫砷铁矿，FeAsS）、雄黄加工制造而成。 产地主产于江西、湖南、广东等省。
