Much more serious threats to many species of fungi are pollution, intensive agriculture and the disappearance of many of the fields, forests, meadows and verges where they used to flourish.
The forests are abundant with medicinal plants and mushrooms, and the fields produce maize, squash, tomatoes, beans, watercress and potatoes, as well as a large range of fruit.
