表土层是指覆盖于含矿层之上，不含有用矿物或其含量不够工业品位的冲积层。一般由泥土层和砂层组成，厚度在几米到几十米之间。泥土层主要包括腐殖土、淤泥、亚砂土、黏士等。砂层主要是由粒径为1~1.0 mm的砂粒组成。
