理性人假设，又称经济人假设，或最大化原则，是西方经济学中最基本的前提假设。西方经济学者指出，所谓“经济人”假设，也称为“合乎理性人”假设，是对在经济社会中从事经济活动的所有人的基本特征的一个一般性抽象。这个被抽象出来的基本特征就是：每一个从事经济活动的人都是利己的。也可以说，每一个从事经济活动的人所采取的经济行为都是力图以自己最小经济代价去获得最大的经济利益。西方经济学家认为，在任何经济活动中，只有这样的人才是“合乎理性的人”；否则，就是非理性的。
