前理解又称“前意识”。是对某种观念、事物在新的理解之前所具有的自我解释状态。前理解是个人与历史文化的继承关系，是个人无法拒绝的东西。前理解在人的语言中保存着。语言保存着历史和文化传统，保留着人们对某一事物的通常解释，每一代人以至每一个人同历史建立联系都要由语言负载下来。人们的思想、感情和全部认识活动在最初理解某一事物时都有一个从语言记载中复制前意识阶段，这样，当人们解释一个新的事物，如果想解释得准确，必须克服自己的前理解状态。要使自己的解释能够被他人接受，还必须充实、调整自己的解释以利于克服他人的前意识状态。
