行星状星云，实质上是一些垂死的恒星抛出的尘埃和气体壳，直径一般在一光年左右。由质量小于太阳十倍的恒星在其演化的末期，其核心的氢燃料耗尽后，不断向外抛射的物质构成。 行星状星云是指外形呈圆盘状或环状的并且带有暗弱延伸视面的星云，属于发射星云的一种。在望远镜中看去，它具有像天王星和海王星那样略带绿色而有明晰边缘的圆面。行星状星云呈圆形、扁圆形或环形，有些与大行星很相像，因而得名。
