社会党可以理解为尊奉社会民主主义或者民主社会主义，反对通过暴力革命方式夺取政权，而主张通过改良把资本主义一点一滴的，和平的过渡到社会主义的修正主义政党的统称。这类政党如美国社会党，法国社会党，德国社会民主党，英国工党等。人们也经常将这类修正主义政党统称为“社会民主党”。
