地母娘娘即后土，也称地姥娘娘、地母元君、虚空地母至尊、后土夫人。天地动静，阴阳互根。天欲化物，阴阳交合，上取天精，下取地精，阴阳孕化，气运成尘，尘有玄道，精微聚合，渐始初生，生生之类，人立其中。女娲为凤，玄始天尊，补天造人，确立婚姻。后土神的产生，源于古人自然崇拜中的土地与女性崇拜，大约在唐朝（公元618年）以后，民间乃称为后土娘娘。宋代以后，道教列为四御尊神之一，执掌阴阳生育、万物之美与山川之秀，道观并设后土殿。民间建后土娘娘祠，每年农历十月十八日相传是后土娘娘圣诞日，隆重祭祀之。她被称为大地之母，是最早的地上之王。
