The commander of the army forces under the U.S.Pacific Command, Lt.General Benjamin Nixon,said Monday that the military maneuvers are preparing both sides to respond to any contingency that may arise in the region.

That prompted a strong protest from China. U.S.military officials deny they bowed to pressure from Beijing and moved the maneuvers from the Yellow Sea, saying the Sea of Japan actually is the most appropriate venue for this drill.
