The Great Pyramid, a 146-metre-high mountain of stone, was created by arranging 2.3 million limestone blocks, each about 2.5 tonnes, with astonishing accuracy.
Several 1911 views of the marble quarries at Carrara might be showing us ice blocks that will melt, rather than the weight and presumably majestic purpose for which this stone is soon destined.
