Relational databases went from narrow use cases to being used for multiple tasks all over the enterprise with APIs, apps on top, and eventually through systems like ERP, they became the center of the enterprise.
In one sense, the activities are short-term in the sense of being about particular product at a particular time, but relational in the sense that the network itself is long lived.
