We combined and got poorer together. (Laughter.) So we combined our liabilities, not our assets. (Laughter.) So we were paying more for our student loans than we paid on our mortgage each month.
When we married, we got poorer together. (Laughter and applause.) We added up our assets and there were no assets. (Laughter.) And we added up our liabilities and there were a lot of liabilities, basically in the form of student loans.
Believe it or not, when Barack and I first started out, building our lives together -- so in love -- (laughter) -- still are -- (laughter and applause) -- our combined student loan debt was actually higher than our mortgage.
Nobody could pronounce my name. (Laughter.) Our poll numbers were quite low.
Now, this is what -- I've been sharing a little of our business. (Laughter.) Just a little.
And I've heard that you have prepared a delicious and, hopefully, healthy snack for our children. (Laughter.) But we're grateful for you, and I'm looking forward to meeting you all.
In the midst of this comedy recession where we have witnessed a severe contraction in our GDL -- gross domestic laughter -- there is one potential goldmine that could use a bit more exploration.
And finally, we believe in keeping our priorities straight -- because we know good and well that cutting Sesame Street is no way to balance our budget. (Laughter and applause.) We know better than that.
And I appreciate the contribution to our communications thinking. (Laughter.) The fact of the matter is we have been very clear that we believe unemployment insurance has to be extended, and we believe that all of the provisions that are expiring at the end of the year need to be part of the conversation here and part of the discussion.
They find time to drive community projects and car pools. (Laughter.) They lead our businesses and our birthday parties.
When Sasha, our little precious pea -- (laughter) -- she got meningitis when she was three months old -- very dangerous.
So even as Sally has spent the majority of her career outside of Washington -- where, I might add, the majority of our interior is located -- (laughter) -- she is an expert on the energy and climate issues that are going to shape our future.

But -- (laughter.) I just note that they sent it today and here we are talking about it. (Laughter.) No, look, our regulatory record speaks for itself.
Now, that may not sound too sexy until -- (laughter) -- energy-efficient buildings. (Laughter.) But listen, our homes and our businesses consume 40 percent of the energy we use.
Now, I have heard rumors that a few of you still have concerns about our new health care law. (Laughter.) So let me be the first to say that anything can be improved.

Just this week, we've taken steps to protect American consumers and homeowners, and to reform our system of government contracting so that we better protect our people while spending our money more wisely. (Applause.) The -- it's a good bill. (Laughter.) The engines of our economy are slowly beginning to turn, and we're working towards historic reform on health care and on energy.
But then again, some folks were surprised that we even started our campaign in the first place. (Laughter.) They didn't give us much of a chance.
Oh, and by the way, I hope everybody has got their Hawaiian shirts -- (laughter) -- and their mumus for our luau tonight.

We never forget seniors because they vote at very high rates. (Laughter.) Not to mention you changed our diapers and things.

You may have noticed, if you look outside, that the cloud of uncertainty -- (laughter) -- has been lifted over our economy, or almost, anyway.
Michelle reminds me of this often. (Laughter.) So instead, it is our hope that people of goodwill can pursue their values and common ground and the common good as best they know how, with respect for each other.

We know that. (Laughter and applause.) We know that shortchanging our kids is not how to tackle our deficit.
And there are schools throughout the country that desperately need renovating. (Applause.) We cannot -- got an "Amen" over there. (Laughter and applause.) We can't expect our kids to do their best in places that are literally falling apart.
And if you can take a couple of weeks off -- because some of you just hang a habit like that -- (laughter) -- we encourage you to join our Vote Corps program to get out the vote specifically in Ohio, which is a key state.
