Mr. Nordberg said analysts have been too focused on sales-volume declines in the July-September period.
These days Nordberg is coming around to partner Google's attempt to sell phones differently, too.
Sony Ericsson and Sony plan to introduce these products by the holidays, said Nordberg.
Without being a part of a larger entity, the joint venture had little hope, said Nordberg, the Sony Mobile head.
"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere, " Mr. Nordberg said during an interview.
"We would be willing to ship phones to that channel as long as there is an understanding with operators, " said Nordberg.
The current generation of smartphones with touch screens isn't "optimized for games, " said Mr. Nordberg, who took over as CEO in October 2009.
Since the spring release of its first Android-based smartphone, Mr. Nordberg said, the company has built a strong position quite quickly in that segment.
Nordberg said Sony Ericsson is interested in mobile Internet devices, but wants to create something distinct from the tablet computers other electronics companies are making.
The company's chief executive, Bert Nordberg, said the new phones "have been well received by operators and we are now well positioned for long-term growth".
Though Sony Ericsson declined an earlier request from Google to develop a phone to be sold through its Web-only store, Nordberg said he is "open" to future collaborations.
Mr. Nordberg was Chairman of Sony Mobile from May-December 2012.

Sony Ericsson Chief Executive Bert Nordberg said he is aware of speculation that the company is at work on a smartphone that would take advantage of Sony's experience in developing the PlayStation Portable videogame device.
Mr. Nordberg, who said he wants to make a lot of "noise" with a new product at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona in February, said there is no technological difficulty in launching a gaming-oriented phone.
