These activities are planned to bring learners, their families and programme staff together, and foster a sense of community among all participants involved in the project, as well as being unique opportunities for the majority of the learners to expand their cultural knowledge and experience.

Grounding many of the activities in real life situations and using various communication methods and skills makes the programme relevant for learners and helps them to gain ownership of the knowledge they acquire.

Prior to the beginning of classes, learners are required to take an assessment test aimed at verifying their entry knowledge on basic literacy and numeracy through the identification of letters, syllables, words, sentences, numbers, arithmetic operations and writing down their personal details.
