Tells about a dig overseen by Hawass at the Valley of the Golden Mummies.
Mr. Hawass and the Director-General agreed to stay closely in touch as the situation continues to unfold.
Zahi Hawass, Egypt's chief archaeologist, described the move as a "wonderful gesture" and said the objects had been "illegally exported".
Dr Hawass also lobbies for the return of other cultural objects deemed to be of great archaeological value to Egypt.
Hawass says that by next spring, the show will have made more than a hundred million dollars for the S.C.
But this can only partly explain the strength of feeling about Hawass.
Hawass is the international star of Egyptology, thanks largely to a steady flow of television documentaries and books to which he is attached.
"I'm really happy that story became very big because this will warn every museum all over the world not to buy stolen artefacts, " says Mr Hawass.
Since he became head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in 2002, Mr Hawass claims to have returned 5, 000 artefacts to Egypt which he says were stolen.
If they cannot be returned permanently, Mr Hawass would at least like them back on loan for the opening of Egypt's Grand Museum at Giza, due by 2013.
Egyptian antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said the research suggests the boy king died after the wound became infected, and though not all of the team agreed with the assessment, all rejected the long-standing murder charge.
BBC: The king is thought to have been 19 years old when he died
The oddity of this role, at the intersection of archeology, show business, and national politics, makes controversy unavoidable, but Hawass is so often found in the middle of an argument that one can usually assume the fuss is strategic.
