The judges who chose his portrait as the winner included Saatchi Gallery director Rebecca Wilson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, well known for his work on The Gruffalo.
Other winners included The Gruffalo, Aardman Animations and Harry Potter.
Thomas Hardy, Dickens and Tolstoy all figure in the list, alongside books for very young children like The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, and Eric Carle's early years counting book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Other Smarties winners were Julia Donaldson and Azel Scheffler for The Gruffalo in the five and under category, and Snow White and the Seven Aliens by Laurence Anholt and Arthur Robins in the six to eight year-olds category.
Scheffler, of course, created the image for the much loved Gruffalo - although he admitted his first sketches were deemed so fearsome by the publishing company, they were toned down, and even hidden behind a bush in early American publications.
The stage adaptation of Donaldson's most famous character the Gruffalo, which I saw a couple of years ago in Felixstowe, was based on the comparatively simple premise of actors playing the scary monster, the even scarier mouse and other characters along the way.
In the picture book category, Rebecca Cobb - who has illustrated books by The Gruffalo creator, Julia Donaldson - has been shortlisted for Lunchtime, while Chris Haughton features for a second year running with Oh No George, about a dog who tries very hard to be well-behaved.
