Among the property companies in Chau's portfolios: Beijing North Star, which owns properties in China's capital.
It is possible, Chau says, because so many overseas fund managers have been underweighting the island.
Among the banks that Chau holds are Wing Hang Bank and Guoco, Dao Heng Bank's majority shareholder.
For help in sorting it out, we turned to Peter Chau, one of Asia's few home-grown market veterans.
At a time when tech shares have lost their luster, Chau says that he's still interested in those shares.
Also seeing gains for trucks, Chau holds Qingling Motors, which manufactures light trucks in western China with Isuzu Motor.
In China proper, Chau is betting on companies that can satisfy the country's growing domestic demand and consumer spending.
"The bottom line is Japan doesn't want to hurt exports, " said Kevin Chau, a senior currency strategist at IDEAglobal.
The opportunity was presented to him by longtime companion Solina Chau, head of his private technology investment company, Horizons Ventures.
The university itself bumped along for two decades but is enjoying a renewed push under Li Ka-shing Foundation director Solina Chau.
"I would look at it from a 'push-and-pull' perspective, " says University of Hong Kong School of Business associate professor Patrick Chau.
"That's why we're seeing the markets trading sideways lately, " said Chau.
With that in mind, Chau holds shares in China Resources, listed in Hong Kong, a Chinese conglomerate whose business extends from food and beverages into retailing.
"We are not a command economy, " sniffs the SAR's secretary for trade and industry, Brian Chau Tak-hay, in an interview with the South China Morning Post.
Despite this, Chau has not been put off and will be making an appointment to see how he and his business will fare in the Year of the Snake.
"There's a silence that falls upon the room as the kids watch him play, " said Tom Chau, vice president for research at Holland Bloorview, and who developed the Virtual Music Instrument.
The unexpected drop in the Conference Board's consumer confidence index to 53.1 in September, from 54.5 in August, provoked a "dollar-safety" play, but Chau believes the market is waiting for Friday's labor report to set the tone for the dollar's near-term future.
In Hong Kong, Chau expects that falling interest rates will help stocks as a whole, especially such blue-chip property developers as Cheung Kong and Sun Hung Kai Properties, both Chau holdings, since lower borrowing costs should stimulate demand for property.
