陆龟(tortoise)属龟科(Testudinidae)陆栖爬虫类。在英国tortoise一词泛指所有的非海栖种类。陆龟仅生活于陆地，仅食植物。在民间传说中，陆龟象征着缓慢、坚定和长寿。在新、旧大陆均有发现。现存40馀种中大多仅分布于非洲和马达加斯加。其特征为背甲高而呈圆盖形；后肢粗大，形如象腿；前肢覆以硬鳞。可分5～7属。箱龟属(Pyxis)仅见于马达加斯加；其他各属（地龟属〔Geochelone〕和沙龟属〔Gopherus〕除外）仅分布于非洲。南欧的普通陆龟及加拉帕戈斯(Galapagos)等岛屿的巨龟皆属陆龟属(Testudo)。中国塔克拉玛干沙漠地区有一种四爪陆龟，这种龟不像普通乌龟那样每肢上长有五爪，而是每肢上只有四爪，且趾间无蹼，不会游泳，只能终生呆在陆地上，穴居生活，故又称旱龟、草原龟。四爪陆龟全年要有300多天的时间钻入沙中，它不但冬眠，而且还要夏眠。
