《诗经》是我国第一部诗歌总集。先秦时代称为“诗”或“诗三百”，孔子曾对其作过整理。西汉时，汉武帝采纳董仲舒“罢黜百家，独尊儒术”的建议，把“诗”尊为经典，定名为《诗经》。《楚辞》的编纂始于西汉，汉成帝河平三年，文学家刘向领校中秘书衔，负责将屈原、宋玉的作品以及汉代东方朔、王褒、刘向等人承袭模仿屈原、宋玉的作品共16篇辑录成集，定名为《楚辞》。
在长达70多年的翻译生涯中，许先生翻译了约120部作品，诗歌尤多，其中包括《诗经》、《楚辞》和《红与黑》等。
