自耕农是以小块土地私有制为基础，以单个家庭为经济单位，从事耕织相结合的个体农业劳动的农户。是中国封建社会赋税、徭役的主要承担者。由于他们是个体小生产者，经济地位极不稳固，两极分化极为显著。 自己占有土地和其他生产资料，依靠自己和家庭成员进行农业经营的个体农民。一般不剥削别人，或者对别人有轻微剥削，或者受别人轻微剥削。其生产通常带有较大程度的自给自足性质（某些商业性农业区除外）。
