群体理论（group theory）是指社会科学中探索和解释群体过程或群体动态及相关问题的理论。美国社会学家霍曼斯将其分为心理学的和社会学两类。前者一般强调实验和调查方法，注重对实验室或自然情境中的群体进行可能的控制与实验，对被试进行定量分析和标准化问卷分析，作出与自变量有关的假设，并进行统计检验。一般命题是关于个体行为的，试图用组成群体的个体特征解释群体的行为和特征。始于 20 世纪 30 年代美国社会心理学家勒温及其追随者关于社会影响的实验和理论研究，并形成群体动力学。
