绩效奖金，也称一次性奖金，绩效工资的实质是“岗位价值押金”。是根据员工的绩效考核结果给与的一次性奖励，即企业在人岗不完全匹配的情况下，将员工对应的岗位薪资水平分拆成两部分，一部分固定发放，一部分则根据绩效调整发放。绩效奖金对于绩效不良者不会进行罚款。
最主要的原因是：在很多公司的最高峰时期，绩效奖金（performance bonuses）和其他和公司利润有关的刺激诱因，构成了总薪酬中相当大的一部分。
