粒子物理，研究对象是粒子。六十年代初，实验发现的基本粒子的数目已达到近百种。而且显然，随着加速器能量的提高，还会有大量的新粒子会被发现出来。原来人们期望基本粒子的研究会给物质世界描绘出一幅很简明的图象。结果却相反，基本粒子的种类竟然比化学元素的种类还多！这使人们意识到，这些粒子并不是物质世界的极终本原。基本粒子对它们不是一个合适的名称。于是人们去掉“基本”二字，而把它们简称为粒子。相应的研究领域也改称为粒子物理。
