相关研究亦称“相关法”（correlational method）。通过应用相关系数， 试图确定变量间关系的一种方法。应用时，不进行随机分组，也不对条件加以精细控制，旨在确定某种变量上自然发生的变化与另一种变量上自然发生的变化间的关系。至少需要收集两套在逻辑上与被试组的每个成员有关的测量分数。用标准的数学公式来考察，可产生一个在+1 到-1 范围内的数，称为相关系数。它显示出一个分数的增加或减少在多大程度上可能伴随着第二个分数的增加或减少。
