热中子，通常指动能约为0.025电子伏特（速度约2.2千米/秒）的自由中子。这个速度也是对应于290K（17℃）时麦克斯韦-玻尔兹曼分布下的最可能速度。 又称“慢中子”。与周围物质一起处于热平衡状态的中子。常指动能在0.03电子伏特左右的中子。多见于以普通水(轻水)为冷却减速剂的反应堆中。
